From academia to politics, Stewart has made a mark in many fields

Rory Stewart is a British academic, broadcaster, and former politician. He was an independent candidate for the Mayor of London and Member of Parliament for Penrith and The Border. In his new memoir, Stewart details his dawning realization that the game of politics was not worth the effort.

Stewart's Early Career

Stewart was born in Hong Kong in 1973. He studied at Eton College and Oxford University, where he earned a degree in oriental studies. After graduating, he worked as a journalist and diplomat. In 2001, he was elected to Parliament as the Conservative MP for Penrith and The Border.

Stewart's Political Career

Stewart served as a member of Parliament for 10 years. During that time, he held a number of ministerial positions, including Minister of State for International Development and Secretary of State for Scotland. He was also a vocal critic of the Iraq War and the Conservative Party's austerity policies.

Stewart's Post-Political Career

Stewart resigned from Parliament in 2019. He has since worked as a broadcaster and author. He is currently the President of GiveDirectly, a charity that provides cash transfers to poor people in developing countries.
